Long-term commitment pays off: Weidmüller celebrates 20 years in China

Weidmüller has been active in the Chinese market for 20 years now. What began with a joint venture has developed into the second-most important site in the world for the Weidmüller group. Reason enough to celebrate the anniversary locally last week.

Nobody at Weidmüller back in 1994 could have foreseen how the Chinese subsidiary would develop. “We started 20 years ago with a joint venture but quickly realised that the market needed an independent sales organisation,” explained Dr Peter Köhler, chairman of the executive board at Weidmüller, at the celebration ceremony in Shanghai. The manufacturing facility in Suzhou and a company training centre followed. “We manufacture and develop products in China for the Chinese and wider Asian market, above all, and our facilities and processes are therefore set up locally,” explained Köhler. A mere ten years after taking its first steps in China, the electrical engineering specialist, which is headquartered in Detmold, Germany, already had 12 sales offices throughout China. The manufacturing facility has been continuously expanded and is currently around 20,000 m2 in size, and the company has been supplying customers from its own logistics centre in Shanghai since 2006. “The opening of our two research and development centres in Suzhou and Shanghai marked a milestone in the development of our activities in China,” recalled Köhler in his speech.

Long-term commitment in china

This was also stressed by Christian Gläsel, chairman of the supervisory board and a member of the family that owns the company, who didn’t want to miss the opportunity to congratulate everyone involved on the occasion of the 20-year anniversary. “Weidmüller is a family business and, as such, we have a long-term business strategy,” asserted Gläsel to an audience of around 220 invited guests from business, politics and society. “Our commitment began in 1994, the Chinese Year of the Dog, whose outstanding character attribute is said to be loyalty,” continued Gläsel. “We have demonstrated this loyalty in the last 20 years, and it has certainly paid off to the very day.”

Strong growth in the last 20 years

Today, Weidmüller is pleased to be thriving in its second most important market: “In terms of both sales and employee numbers, we have seen an almost 20-fold increase since we started,” explained the chairman of the executive board. One notable feature of this growth has been the Weidmüller Academy Asia: “The Chinese market became so important to us that we put in place education, basic and advanced training by transferring our successful academy system to China in 2011.”

Sustainable growth in china

Weidmüller China has experienced rapid yet sustainable growth in the last 20 years. “Our commitment to China has become central to the development, production and sales network of the Weidmüller group. Nobody could have imagined that in 1994 – that’s something we are proud of and thankful for,” said Christian Gläsel in conclusion.
